Falafels with Spicy Carrot Salad

Learn how to make your own falafels at home and serve with a spicy carrot accompaniment.


For the falafel:

  • 1 white onion, peeled and roughly chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, peeled
  • Small bunch coriander
  • Small bunch parsley
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • 400g tin chickpeas, drained
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds
  • Olive oil spray

For the Salad:

  • 750g carrots, washed
  • Half red cabbage
  • 1 red onion, peeled
  • 2 green chillies
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • Small bunch coriander
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • Salt and pepper

Method (Serves 4)

  1. Add all the ingredients for the falafel, except the chickpeas, to a food processor and chop finely
  2. Add the chickpeas, salt and pepper and pulse into a rough paste
  3. Roll the mixture into small balls and transfer to a lightly greased baking tin, and chill for 30 minutes
  4. Once chilled, spray with olive oil and sprinkle with sesame seeds
  5. Bake in a preheated oven at 200°C for 20 minutes until golden brown
  6. Fit a grating attachment to the food processer and grate the carrots
  7. Switch to a fine slicing attachment and slice the cabbage, onion and chillies
  8. Whisk together the spices, lemon juice and oil and season with salt and pepper
  9. Add to the salad along with chopped coriander and toss to combine
  10. Serve the falafel with the spicy carrot salad, pitta bread and lemon wedges
